The Gallery, Reflecting Faith in the Potentials of the City of Niš

Niš is a town of long history, of glorious names from distant past, the venue in which in the minds of Emperor Constantine and Mother Helen today’s European Christian civilization was conceived.

Today, Niš is the city of the young. One needs only to walk along its streets and see them thronging with youthful energy. Energy breeds talent. Such was the belief of Niš native Radovan Lale Đurić, who moved out of his hometown long ago and settled in New York. There he became successful as a painter. He spared no effort, work or resources to start up Niš Art Foundation. Its objective is to help young talented individuals from around our country, and to make a streamlined gallery building, the most beautiful and modern in the region, where every year young artists, up to 35 years of age, will present their creations from the previous twelve months.

Niš, the second city in the country by size, can use this very gallery as a centre from which a new kind of energy, a new view and experience of the world will emerge. In addition, the gallery will also provide an alternative stage for new enterprises in performing arts.

Thanks to the donation of DIN “Fabrika Duvana“ a.d. Niš, part of Philip Morris International, a company with well-established understanding of the potentials of Niš culture, all conditions have been met for the Foundation to grow and for the gallery enterprise to extend beyond local borders.

It is no secret that in Niš apathy prevails among those who should be supporting the cultural tradition of this city, which is by no means neglectable.

The energy that will glow from this gallery, as the core of new ventures, will provide impetus to other events in the city, too. The gallery, and faith in the youth of those around it, will bring in new hope for the artistic potentials of Niš. I believe in those potentials and in the mission of the Foundation, which started precisely with the benefit of youthful talent in mind.

Supporting the spirit of innovation…

April 2007, year two of the Nis Art Foundation.

Young talents from the Balkans are on stage again to charm all of us once more with their contemporary messages.

Energy on canvas, fifty emotions in color, fifty diverse forms of visual expression, fifty unlikely outlooks on our contemporary reality, fifty hopeful messages from young talents wishing to surprise and engage all those who trust that arts are a powerful form of expression, a language not made by words but capable to spread feelings, perceptions intuition …

Business and art, unlike many may think, have a lot to share; they both live out of the same individual energy; they both need freedom to express themselves; they both talk the language of the society they live in; they both live out of change and innovation; they both seek for visibility and for an appropriate space to get their message across…

In transitional environments like Serbia, changes in society, in economy, in lifestyles and in culture are the name of the game and art expressions uncover the invisible and voice the unspoken. Art is a creative effort; it anticipates trends in society and it tells us more about the environment we live in than any other form of conventional communication.

That’s why a leading trans-national corporation, like the one I am representing, is supporting talents and art expressions, especially contemporary arts, at a worldwide level.

Talent needs nurturing, it needs a chance and – most of all – it needs a supporter.

That’s why we are committed to supporting young contemporary artists in Serbia, and in the Balkans, through the Nis Art Foundation.

I welcome these fifty new ambassadors of arts, I commend their creative effort and I very much trust their constructive contribution to the betterment of the society we belong to.

CONTINUATION OF SUPPORT TO THE SPIRIT OF INNOVATION

April 2008, year III - Niš Art Foundation

“Talent needs nurturing, it needs a chance and – most of all – it needs a supporter”. These are the words written by my predecessor Eugenio Sidoli, the former Managing Director of DIN “Fabrika duvana” a.d. Nis an affiliate of Philip Morris International, in the catalogue for the second consecutive exhibition--the Art of Young in April 2007.  Eugenio, Lale and the Nis Art Foundation were the leaders in creating the exhibition and I am pleased that their vision continues for a third consecutive year.  I am pleased that the exhibition is becoming a traditional art event in Nis, Belgrade and Novi Sad.

Again this year, the Nis Art Foundation has provided the young artists from all around Serbia with a chance to be heard, recognised and appreciated for their talents.  This catalogue presents the best forty-nine artworks of young painters, sculptors and graphic artists that were selected amongst 800 artists who submitted their work to the NAF Art Contest. The number and the quality of the submitted work, as testified by the art connoisseurs, clearly shows that the engagement of such an organisation as NAF has contributed to improving the art scene in Nis and Serbia.

It is also important that the Niš Art Foundation has not limited itself to fine arts, but it has organized a competition for the best short play written by young playwrights up to the age of 35.  The subject of the plays was the past, present and future of the city of Niš.  It is well known that the best proof of success of a drama related competition is if a play is materialized in a good theatrical performance. And that undoubtedly happened, through great media and public attention,  with the performance "ОдабраNI и уNIŠтени", an adaptation of the three awarded plays written by three young playwrights, two being from Niš (selected during the anonymus competition), starring the actors from the National Theater in Niš. It is of significant importance that this perfomance is a coproduction of one of the most important cultural insitutions in Niš – The National Theater and the Foundation itself. I believe that this sets a good example to other institutions in Niš to encourage cultural cooperation.

With our support, the Niš Art Foundation has another interesting undertaking this year, the Exhibition dedicated to Leonardo da Vinci’s codices and inventions.  From May through July, the public in Niš and Belgrade will have the opportunity to see an outstanding exhibition of more than sixty models and inventions, reproduced according to the original drawings of this Renaissance genius. The models represent visionary conceptions of future robots, hovercrafts, automobiles, catapults and some of Leonardo’s other ingenious inventions.

I would like to thank the Nis Art Foundation for their efforts to foster the engagement of young talents in art disciplines and to reward the most creative forms of expression.  Their efforts have helped inspire cultural creativity and brought together art experts and art lovers from all around Serbia to help celebrate the talented young artists of this country.

Uz našu podršku Niš Art Fondacija preuzima na sebe još jedan interesantan poduhvat -  izložbu posvećenu kodeksima i izumima Leonarda  Da Vinčija.

SUPPORTING CREATIVE SPIRIT AS PART OF CONTRIBUTION TO COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT

It is four year already, that DIN Philip Morris supports the Niš Art Foundation and its initiatives directed towards helping the young artists from Serbia. I ampleased that the exhibition is becoming a traditional art event in Niš, Belgrade and Novi Sad and they manage to promote some of the values that are importantdrivers of the community - the creativity, energy and commitment of talented individuals.

In 2009, the Niš Art Foundation has provided the young artists from all around Serbia with a chance to be heard, recognised and appreciated for their talents. This catalogue presents the best artworks of young painters, sculptors and graphic artists that were selected amongst hundreds of artists who submitted their work to the NAF Art Contest. The number and the quality of the submitted work, as testified by the art connoisseurs, clearly shows that the engagement of such an organisation as NAF has contributed to improving the art scene in Nis and Serbia.

I sincerely hope that the artwork collected in this catalogue will help you see that Niš is confidently stepping towards becoming a sovereign centre of arts and creativity not only in the South East region, but in the entire Serbia.

THE YOUNG ONES AS THE GROWING STRENGTH OF THE COMMUNITY

April 2010

This is the fifth year that DIN Philip Morris has supported the activities of the Niš Art Foundation and the annual Art Contest for young Serbian artists is probably the one that has managed to build solid grounds for a traditional cultural manifestation fostering the upcoming creative force of Serbia.

This year’s contest is the first one without Olja Ivanjicki, the honourable member of Nis Art Foundation who passed away last year, but has left behind her a significant legacy within the foundation and endless inspiration for the next generations of young artists.

Apart from NAF’s founder, Radovan Lale Djuric and its member Neda Arneric, this year’s jury was joined by the painter Kristina Ristic, who won two awards at the last years’ Art Contest. This is obvious proof that the new generation has grown through the efforts of the Nis Art Foundation and they are confidently becoming an integral part of the organisation and Serbia culture.

This exhibition brings the best pieces of artwork submitted to the NAF Art Contest 2010. As usual, the Contest has drawn an overwhelming quantity and a great variety of artwork which obviously made the selection process by the jury a difficult one. However, what makes me feel particularly proud, is that the collection selected for this exhibition demonstrates and promotes the great potential of Serbian young artists.

Niš Art Foundation’s Art Contest remains one of the unique national art contests in the country that aims at supporting the best young painters, sculptors and graphic artists. The uniqueness of this contest is conveyed in the fact that apart from selecting three winners of the valuable financial award, the Niš Art Foundation also provides a rather special opportunity to other contestants to be recognised and promoted through the exhibitions “YOUNG” organised in Nis, Belgrade and Novi Sad.

I wish that the young artists and their work that is so enthusiastically being promoted by Nis Art Foundation will become an inspiration for the new generations of Serbian artists as one of the greatest assets of our society.

MLADI SU RASTUĆA SNAGA ZAJEDNICE

April 2010. godine

THE YOUNG 2011

The Nis Art foundation once again has delivered on its initiative to support young artists throughout Serbia. The exhibition continues to be re-cognized for the top talent that it attracts and with exhibitions in Nis, Belgrade and Novi Sad it opens the door for many people to enjoy and witness the talented young artists that we have in this country.

The Nis Art Foundation provides an opportunity for young artists to be heard, appreciated and importantly recognized for their Talent. Likewise our business here in Serbia, Philip Morris aims to do exactly the same thing, giving people in our organization the opportunity to grow and prosper whilst developing their careers to the full extent of their potential. As you will see in this catalogue the quality of artwork that will be exhibited this year is at an amazing standard and I hope that in some small way this exhibition can assist these young fine artists the opportunity to also develop their careers and make the most of the talent that they have worked so hard for.

Since its commencement, Philip Morris has been a supporter of the Nis Art Foundation and it is proud that through this event an avenue has been created for talented Serbian artists to show what they can do. Enjoy this year’s exhibition and take the time to admire the best of the best young artist that Serbia has to ofer!

MLADI 2011

YOUNG 2012

Welcome to another year of having the opportunity to see the best of the best of Serbian Artists.

Each year I wonder is it possible that the quality of art represented in the upcoming NAF show could meet the high standards of the previous year, yet every year I am left amazed at what these fabulous Artists produce and this year is certainly no different.

There is no doubt that the secret to Serbia’s future success lies in the ability for the ongoing release of the potential within the many talented young people in this fabulous country. Whether it be in business, science, the arts or sports, seeing young people exceed in their chosen field inspires not only those close to them but those who observe and witness from a far. For that reason, Philip Morris continues to see the development of young people through creating opportunities for them to excel in one of our key areas of focus in supporting the community.

I hope you enjoy this year’s show, but importantly take the time to reflect what is actually behind what you see the creativity, the dedication and the free spirited mindset that goes into each and every piece.

In closing I would like to thank all those that have contributed and to the Nis Art Foundation for organizing this year's contest and wish every participant the very best for their future as they continue to develop their skills.

All the very best,

MLADI 2012

Sve najbolje,

THE YOUNG ONES ARE THE FUTURE

On the occasion of the eighth annual Art Contest for young artists, followed by the “YOUNG” exhibition of the best selected artwork from the Contest, I can express both pride and utter delight for having had the honor to support the Nis Art Foundation.  The initial idea born back in 2006 has now grown into a traditional cultural manifestation fostering the upcoming creative forces of Serbia.

Philip Morris' vision for supporting community development is founded in our belief in the value of supporting an environment in which talent is recognised and in which talented individuals are provided the opportunity to reach their full potential as academics, entrepreneurs and overall community leaders of the future.

The Nis Art Foundation with its activities pursues this goal as well. The Contest selection process is more difficult every year.  The increasing number of applications as well as the quality of artwork submitted testifies that Nis Art Foundation Art Contest is indeed a benchmark that young artists aspire to in order for their talent and work to be recognized.   I am particularly glad that among the Jury members we now have a former Contest winner.  This is the ultimate proof that with this initiative we have managed to promote some of the best talents for future growth.

I wish that the young artists and their work, which is so enthusiastically being promoted by Nis Art Foundation, will become an inspiration for the new generations of Serbian artists as one of the greatest assets of our society.

What can you do in Serbia when you are a young artist?

As a young artist, there is not much you can do in Serbia. You can work hard and hope that one day you will be noticed by a curator, one among the few renowned gallerists, or even rarer rich collectors. On the other hand, you may try your luck somewhere far away in the big world, and try to invest your talent and knowledge in the best possible way.

The unwritten rule says that the young are always expected to accomplish more than what the elderly didn't do or what they did wrong. Having in mind the overall situation and circumstances in which we live, we can conclude that no matter what the young do, they are doing fine, because being a young artists in Serbia is a success by itself. The youngest generation of artists is as a rule left on its own. After school and Art Academy, artists become a part of a completely disorganized system governed by no rules, where only the most persistent ones survive.  And, while big exhibitions were organized before, aiming to present the most recent works of young artists, today we barely have a few initiatives which focus on the work of local young artists.

Somebody will perhaps rightly ask what the purpose of all this is: why insist on art when we are facing a lot of problems which, in their complexity and social relevance, go by far beyond all that art can offer? One answer might be simply because we have chosen to do so, because we know that art surpasses all banality, because it has the power to generate ideas that change things at their core. It is art that criticizes, that uses its subtle mechanisms to help us run away from the harsh reality for at least a short while, or to help us face it bravely.

The competition, the prize and the activities of Nis Art Foundation are those rare initiatives which draw public attention to the work of young artists in Serbia. In spite of the unquestionable quality of national artists who should most certainly be guided by professionals, when we talk about the scene and the attitude of the society towards it, we can openly say that we haven’t succeeded in turning art into an interesting and profitable activity. Art and artists are still on the fringes of social events because they are too normal and uninteresting a part of the population in the midst of the overall decline in standards, the collapse in moral values and the overwhelming effect of yellow press on the entire society. Despite the fact that they create works with the power to change the perception of millions of people, their voice remains unheard in the vast sea of trivialities and information of the media society in which we live. What young artists need is the possibility to freely create and to have their voice heard by those who want to listen and follow their work.

The generation of artists presented in this exhibition clearly shows that they can tackle different aspects of our reality and give their comment on it. New tendencies, the use of new technologies, an active and critical attitude towards society, and new realities can be seen in many works. An entire range of young artists coming from the newly established art academies has very successfully and actively joined the activities in the scene. This fresh energy and strength is proving to be a necessary factor for the revival of the scene which is becoming more and more aware of the need for change, for faster and more significant connections with Europe and the world. At the moment in which art is struggling under the burden of marketing strategies and exaggerated commercialization, it is encouraging to know that there is still someone to give young artists a chance and to believe in the new ideas they bring. The perception and articulation of the world around us in the works of artists points at the process of constant questioning of the art’s position within a social system which is so flawed and inconsequential. .

The work of Nis Art Foundation is one of the better examples of investment in the future and faith in young and talented artists. Sponsored awards offered by the Foundation are above all a stimulus and encouragement to all at the start of their career. As there is practically no market for works of modern art, and especially for those of young artists, the prize of Nis Art Foundation represents an important moment in their professional growth. Already boasting a great experience, made possible through years of work, this exhibition has become a new biennial of the young, an incubator of new ideas and strivings, a central point around which a new generation of artists will gather.

Percepcija i artikulacija sveta oko nas u radovima mladih umetnika ukazuje na proces konstantnog preispitivanja pozicija umetnosti unutar društvenog sistema prepunog mana i nedoslednosti.

The Tenth Exhibition of Niš Art Foundation “YOUNG  2016”

In the absence of a responsible and efficient state cultural policy, upon the idea of painter Radovan Lale Đurić, in 2005 a group of artists and culture professionals founded Niš Art Foundation, with the primary intention to assist in the promotion and affirmation of young artists in Serbia. In order to implement this noble and purposeful idea, they established the “Young”  exhibition, a yearly event based on an open competition, with the right of participation of artists aged up to thirty five.

After a full decade of regular yearly exhibitions, due to its unique concept, proven vitality, professional selection and organization, the exhibition “Young” is now highly positioned on the map of cultural events in our country, gladly visited by the audience and covered in the media. By taking part in the exhibition, hundreds of young artists from all parts of the country have been given the first true verification of their work; about thirty of them have been awarded the purchase prizes by Niš Art Foundation.

In any field, art in particular, professional beginnings are particularly hard because they impose serious dilemmas and questions: should one “walk” the trodden path or should one explore new directions? How should one remain “on a knife edge”, but still remain intact?  Based on this year’s “Young” exhibition, tenth in a row, our young artists have used a lot of personal shrewdness, but also responsibility - both aesthetic and ethical - to resolve the said early enigmas, thus decisively starting to create their own role and position in the world of fine arts.

The exhibition, which after the final selection presents the pieces of 47 artists, is inevitably heterogeneous in nature and offers thematic, stylistic, and conceptual diversity. Each author goes along a personally selected path of the visualization of the subjective and the objective, testifying to the fact that stylistic pluralism is a permanent feature of our time. With no ambition to delve into a more detailed analysis in this text, we only note the principal characteristics. The vast majority of authors has opted to work within the classic domain of the “painting”. Some of them seek the way toward their artistry in spatial and coloristic ratios, a combination of color and texture, contour and surface, i.e. in personal touches marked by various degrees of abstraction or association  (Aleksandra Ilić, Vuk Ćuk, Mate Đorđević, Vuk Vučković, Ranko Travanj, Maja Đorđević, Ivana Milev). There are now significantly more artists whose starting points show an inclination to reality, yet the final products, i.e. works, belong to the realm of the figurative. The basic motive of the human figure represents the thematic and emotional grounds for the pieces. One can find here quite a bit of loneliness, confusion, suffering,  conflict with oneself, with the environment,... In the pieces of the selected artists, man is more a lone wolf and a scream than an axis mundi and a spiritus movens.

Various existential and mental dilemmas and doubts, typical of the contemporary times, can be recognized in the context of the works by Jelena Vićentić, Miloš Ilić, Milica Cvetić, Maja Petrović Babić, Edis Muminović, Tanja Taborin, Milica Lazarević, Irena Kovač, Milan Vukašinović, Dejan Krstić, Vladimir Sekulić, whereas, for instance, Bojan Radišić is convincing us that even the powerful individual is grotesque in his unfathomed tragic fate. The very artistic styles of the artists mentioned above show a considerable amount of gradation, from a high level of verism to the expressionist approach to treating form, color, and painted structure.

Some of the artists opted for the drawing, as an independent art discipline - we should say rightly so, since they competently use the line as the basic visual element. Whether they approach drawing in a classical way (Nemanja Okiljević, Lazar Balšić, Luka Tripković, Stefan Mirosavić) or they conceptually experiment and reify the drawing, making it closer to other media (Nemanja Nikolić, Andrea Dramićanin, Teodora Vojinović), their pieces show all features of  fully completed works of art.

In addition to the fact they use different materials, sculptors presenting in the current exhibition have different approaches to sculpture: from sculpture as an event in space (Nevena Vuksanović, Dunja Trutin) through sculpture as a linearly diachronic structure (Branko Milanović) or intimate story (Gorski Kabadaja, Dušan Zubčić) to sculpture with a symbolically engaged connotation (Boris Zečević).

The exhibition can certainly be experienced and interpreted as a kaleidoscope of various thoughts, feelings, and messages communicated through the joint action of individual poetics and universal aesthetics.

In the times threatening to marginalize the position and importance of art, the “Young” exhibition sheds light on our current potentials, and reassures us that they are the guarantors of the survival of sublime values. The young artists have courageously taken up the adventure called art, which exhibits dangerous, yet also salvaging uncertainty. We most cordially wish them a happy journey with successful results.

Jedan deo njih put ka likovnosti traži u prostornim i kolorističkim odmeravanjima, kombinovanju boje i fakture, konture i površine, dakle u svojevrsnim ličnim pečatima obeleženim različitim vidovima apstrakcije ili asocijacije (Aleksandra Ilić, Vuk Ćuk, Mate Đorđević, Vuk Vučković, Ranko Travanj, Maja Đorđević, Ivana Milev).

Sami likovni rukopisi pomenutih umetnika pokazuju široku skalu gradacije – od  visokog stepena verizma do ekspresionističkog pristupa u pogledu tretiranja forme, boje i slikane strukture.

The eleventh exhibition of Niš Art Foundation ‘Youth 2017’

The exhibition ‘Youth’ organized by Niš Art Foundation is entering the second decade of its existence and successful operation. As a rare national art event intended for young artists solely, it persists with its intention and noble mission to register the accomplishments and potential of the upcoming generations of artists so as to contribute to their affirmation and adequate positioning on the current art scene.

Under the slogan This changes everything, after the selection,  this year’s exhibition ‘Youth’ has  incorporated  the works of forty-eight artists. Even a quick view of the present artworks suggests that with their imagination, intelligence, emotions and knowledge young artists evidently transpose traces of their existential into artistically well thought out creativity. Earnestly listening to man, the world, nature, civilization, tradition… and encouraged by their gift they genuinely comment on the present and predict the future.

Individual approaches are various. Alongside the different media used (pictures, drawings, collages), thematic and stylistic differences are also evident. With a touch of caution, we focus only on certain segments, providing general characteristics.

A considerable number of artists, following their personal attitude, decisively comment on different emotional and traumatic experiences of modern man, based on his identity or integrity. Most of their works belong to the genre of portrait, while artistic elaboration varies from the light linear arabesque (Milan Antić) to felegreed precise drawing of a narrowly colored register (Milan Vukašinović, Veljko Vučković), to coloristic scatteredness and hyperrealistic  credibility (Petar Mošić, Predrag Đukić, Aleksandar Pauković, Maja Petrović, Dejan Krstić). Others approach this theme with a glimpse of irony and sarcasm, by visually defining it in an expressionist manner (Tina Radulović, Marko Tomanović, Vuk Đurić), while some of them indicate the connection with tradition by using either a detailed motive or an iconographic stylistic technique (Đorđe Savić).

Dramatic situations and examples of global and local circumstances of ecological, engineering, technological or cultural origin that mark the life of the present, making it difficult to the level of threat, are accentuated by the works of one group of artists (Milan Stepović, Stefan Lukić, Petar Đorđević, Aleksa Pivnički, Bojan Radišić, Ivan Milenković). We sense the concern for the humaneness of the life of an individual or crowd in the context of the works by Marija Nikolić and Vuk Vučković.

Simultaneously, at the exhibition there are also authors who direct their artistic discourse towards the so-called neutral themes,  by opting for the incorporation of the concrete into the abstract milieu (Maja Jovanović Nikolić, Mate Đorđević), for associative expression (Nikola Radosavljević), or various aspects of abstraction, from geometry (Nikola Lazić, Jovana Čajović) and optical illusions (Sofija Vojnović, Sanja Momčilović) to abstract expressionism visible in a liberated gesture and emphasized pastuous nature of the art pieces (Radoslav Tadić).

For a group of artists, the landscape is a genuine inspirational starting point which, with a great deal of personal peculiarity, they interpret by escaping from the appearance and concretization. Miljan Stevanović and Lidija Delić treat the landscape sentimentally and poetically with accentuated atmosphere and a puzzling sfumato; Ana Marković reduces the landscape to a rhythmical intertwining of lines; Jelena Micić decodes it to the level of monochrome dyed fields, while Snežana Zlatović reduces it to painted electronic pixels.

By observing the pieces of ten present sculptors as a separate whole, one should primarily point out the variety of sculptural materials used. Some of the artists, in relation to the theme or motive that they deal with, make an unusual or unexpected choice of the material (Magdalena Pavlović, Nevena Vuksanović, Danijel Jakimovski). Nevertheless, they succeed in its adaptation to the initial idea by processing and transforming it. In a formally stylistic sense, it is noticeable that the works of biomorphic and anthropomorphic forms of mutually distinct approaches are dominant (Milija Špajak, Slavica Obradović, Marija Rajčić, Rade Mutapović, Petar Sibinović), whereas the examples of geometrically stylized shapes are rare (Andreja Krstić). There is also a wide range of their emotional ideas and messages, from provocation (Sonja Rajić) to a disturbing warning (Mutapović). In a word, although the number of sculptures is low, they confirm the actual fact about the existing polymorphism of sculptural thoughts and ideas.

Emerging in the territory of a country burdened with a variety of problems, a young generation of artists is decisively stepping on the art stage. By making the acquired knowledge more succinct and crossing the path from craft to skill and mastery, they succeed in finding the authentic language for the visual expression of their personal experience of the world and art.

By the power of inevitability, young artists bring vigor and dynamics into the artistic life of Serbia, and the encounter with their pieces, made possible by this exhibition, gives birth to sublime emotions and always reaffirms the belief in the high potentials of young talents, a belief originally cherished by the painter Radovan Lale Đurić (Niš, 1945 – New York, 2014) when he first founded Niš Art Foundation twenty years ago.

Jedanaesta izložba Niš Art Fondacije “Mladost 2017”

Izložba “Mladost” u organizaciji   “Niš Art fondacije”,  ulazi u drugu deceniju postojanja i uspešnog rada.

Dela većine njih pripadaju žanru portreta,  a likovna razrada varira od lake linearne arabeske (Milan Antić), preko filigranski preciznog crteža uskog bojenog registra (Milan Vukašinović, Veljko Vučković) do kolorističke razudjenosti i hiperrealističke uverljivosti ( Petar Mošić, Predrag Đukić, Aleksandar Paunković, Maja Petrović, Dejan Krstić).

Twelfth Exhibition of Niš Art Foundation “Youth 2018”

For twelve years in a row, each spring, young artists and the professional community have eagerly awaited the open competition of Niš Art Foundation for the best works of fine arts by creative individuals eighteen to thirty five years old. The turnout of interested artists has been massive: since the establishment of this prize fund there have always been between four and five hundred young authors applying to the competition. Therefore, the selection committee always has a task that is simultaneously responsible and not at all easy – to go through the plentitude of paintings, sculptures, prints, drawings, works on paper, find those pieces that excel in quality, and conceive of an annual presentation that will most appropriately exhibit the achievements of the youngest artists and point to new personalities or occurrences on our art scene.  This yearly overview of the youngest artists’ creative work has the primary goal to suggest personalities, but it also aims to register new tendencies in the treatment of the classical media required in the terms of the competition. The intention is not only to favor and preserve the painting, sculpture and print techniques, but also to incorporate their extended forms so as to acknowledge new language idioms and reversible processes of implementing the practical experience of working with new technologies.

The advantage of this reward competition lies not only in the significant amount of money or the honor for the awarded artist whose piece becomes part of the respectable collection of artworks of Philip Morris International, but also in the fact the same artist can apply again, until the age of thirty five. In practice, this means that the artist can reveal him or herself to the jury every year and test whether his or her success was a flash of freshness and youthful playfulness, or if the creative personality in question cherishes his or her personal investigative and artistic program which he or she surmounts in different ways in different periods, striving for personal and artistic maturation. This invaluable professional practice of participating in the open competition, sometimes successfully, and sometimes not, helps the young artist overcome the temptations of public life of art and develop self-criteria regarding his or her own work. The practice according to which the jury gathers several times with a slightly reduced, but professionally the same, number of members, testifies to the fact that in this way changes in the creative work of the young are monitored and achievements in various age groups are compared.

This year’s selection of pieces participating in the competition suggests the domination of painting compared with other forms and techniques of expression. It seems that rethinking the capacities of two-dimensional, flat space is the main preoccupation this season. Different narratives, with figural presentations prevailing, occupy the attention of this year’s candidates. Portraits with hyper-realistic or photorealistic traits are still a creative challenge that young authors wish to try their hand at. This often employed technique sometimes goes so far as to provide the result showing one’s skill only (today so praised among collectors). In that respect the pieces by Paunković and Krstić supersede the standard, veristic approach, while efforts of some authors are driven by other interpretations of this classical genre. In the treatment of the de/reconstruction carried out by Đorđević we find a serious ambition to use colored surfaces so as to suggest a configuration of the face, or head silhouettes, which reveal themselves as a coloristic echo in the painting by J. Spasić. In the monochromatic pieces by N. Adamović, who frames his scenes with the details of figures entering and leaving sequences of darkness, there is a direct link with the photographic / filmic understanding of the painting.  The portrait as a photo negative is the piece by the artist I. Mašić. From the figural compositions with several participants in the piece “Lunch” by Ž. Vitorović, providing a testimony of alienation, to the dramatically painted scene of present-day refugees in “The Second Raft of the Medusa” by M. Stepović, one finds engagement and preoccupation with the topics of contemporary life and world which use their specific atmosphere, in the latter case also the tragic nature of the chosen documentary / photographic template, so as to provide a well thought-out and artistically refined way to present humane ideas and express genuine concern for human suffering on the personal, individual, but also global levels.  Interior and architecture, exteriors as selected motives are only an inspiration to examine camera shots, presentations of reality, translated into the language of the plastic, executed in the manner of a drawing, in the absence of description or materialization in color, which is the case with artists such as Đ. Sivački and L. Milovanović. What one can claim with certainty is that photography and photo optics are very much present and important in the works of the youngest, which is obvious in this year’s competition too, as already mentioned in this text. Let us just add a few more remarks on the relationship between photography and painting that can be read in this year’s selection, where the paragon between these media is one of its most striking characteristics. In that sense some of the pieces made after a photo could belong to the culture of remembrance as a reflection of the past or transience, which is noticeable in the paintings by B. Radišić, I. Milenković, V. Miljković or the reliefs by N. Kirćanski. Sculpture is discreetly present (in terms of numbers), inclining toward spatial drawing, arabesque, or systemic, modular construction (I. Milev), while only three sculptures are spatially conceived; the author T. Dragan has presented herself with a low relief polyptych as a corpus of reduced drawings and superposed surfaces in the metal, thus contributing to the impression that in this year’s offer of works themes have prevailed reflecting on the challenges of bringing visual effects together – from two- toward three-dimensional forms and vice versa.

Let us finally mention the presence of authors whose refined abstract expression has contributed to the versatility and quality of this year’s selection. Yet we should pay particular attention to the fact that young artists have stepped into the adventure of monumental painting and successfully conquered the painting formats they set before themselves. In this respect, one should note the paintings by A. Ilić and R. Tepvačević who used fragments, outlines of figures, or textual interventions on the painted, abstract picture background to successfully create the concatenation of plastically consistent pieces, for which one could use the perhaps not so audibly aesthetic, but still precise technical term “glocal creative work” (which blends local character and global meaning).

I also wish to stress that the point of this text, even though the names of a few authors have been mentioned, is not to favor some of the participants, but rather to provide a reception of the poetics dominating this year’s selection, as a possible snapshot of the currents among our young professionals in fine/visual arts.

I believe it is always necessary to mention the founder of this Foundation, Radovan Lale Đurić, who not only left a trace in the culture of his hometown through his work as an artist, but was also noble and visionary enough to establish Niš Art Foundation, a legacy for the future with full responsibility, to serve young artists and at the same time to raise awareness on the importance of investing in the future of art in our area. The initiative of this artist, who had an important career in New York, but who also gained valuable experience in terms of the need to encourage large corporations to support art, has not remained without a response in Niš. As part of its corporate social responsibility, Philip Morris International has responded and financially supported this project, which unfortunately remains a sole such example in our area. Convinced that Philip Morris International will remain committed to this noble mission and continue providing significant marketing and financial support to the youngest artists, thus contributing to the development of culture in the area in which it operates, we hope that artists will also find followers in other institutions with a similar profile, ready to support their work.

Sivački i L. Milovanović.
